Description
Space shuttle Discovery photo (mission 51-A, the 14th shuttle flight) showing astronaut Dale A. Gardner during the retrieval of Westar VI, a stranded communications satellite. The manned maneuvering unit (MMU), a motorized backpack, allows him to travel in space free of the space- craft. Gardner is carrying a device called the apogee kick motor capture device, or stinger", which enters the engine nozzle of the satellite, stabilizing it sufficiently for towing to the shuttle. The mission saw the retrieval of a second satellite, Palapa B-2, & the deployment of two new communications satellites, Telesat H & Syncom IV- 1. The mission lasted 8 days (8-16 Nov., 1984)."
