Description
Space shuttle Discovery (mission 51-A, the 14th shuttle mission), showing the retrieval of Westar VI, a stranded communication satellite. Both astronauts, Dale A. Gardner & Joseph P. Allen, are wearing manned maneuvering units (MMU), motorized backpacks which allow travel in space free of the spacecraft. Astronaut Allen stands on the end of the remote manipulating arm to receive the satellite as it approaches the shuttle. Palapa B- 2, a second damaged satellite, was also retrieved & returned to earth for repair. Two other satellites, Telesat H & Syncom IV-1, were deployed during the mission, which lasted eight days from the 8th-16th November 1984.
