Description
Combined reflection and dark nebula, optical image. The blue reflection nebula at right is catalogued as Cederblad 201 (Ced 201). It does not emit light, instead shining by reflecting the light of the bright star within it. The dark nebula (van den Bergh 152), extending from centre to left, is part of the same cloud of gas and dust, but lacks an illuminating star. It is seen in silhouette as it blocks the light from the stars beyond it. Ced 201, like other reflection nebulae, appears blue as blue light is scattered more effectively than red. This also explains why stars seen through vdB 152 appear redder, as their blue light has been dispersed by the dust. The complex lies in the constellation Cepheus.
