Description
Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) in an article by P.L Sclater on the Rhinoceros in captivity in London Zoo (Trans Zool Soc Vol9 Pl. XCVI). Fine contemporary coloured lithograph drawn by J. Wolf, lithographed by J. Smit and printed by M & N Hanhart 1876. The species is currently critically endangered, with only one breeding population and no captive animals. Past attempts to breed in captivity have failed badly. The species has been hunted to the verge of extinction in Indonesia for its single small horn. It is now possibly the rarest large mammal in the world with as few as 40 individuals in existance. It was recognised and described in 1822, the last of the Rhino species to be described by western science.
