Description
Purkinje nerve cells, historical illustration. Purkinje cells consist of a flask-shaped cell body with many branching processes (dendrites) that receive impulses from other cells. Purkinje cells form the junction between the granular and molecular layers of the grey matter of the cerebellum. The cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. Purkinje neurons are among the most branched cells in the nervous system. Artwork from 'Traite d'Anatomie Humaine' (1905) by French anatomist Leo Testut (1849-1925).
