Description
Scanning electron micrograph of pseudogout showing crystals of calcium phosphate which accumulate in the synovial fluid of the knee joint. Symptoms of pseudogout are inflammation, swelling, reduced articulation & the deformation & ultimately the destruction of the joint. The disease is known as pseudogout for its resemblance to gout. The crystals associated with gout, however, are formed from sodium urate due to a malfunctioning of the uric acid metabolism. Magnification X4000 (at 13x13cm size).
