Description
Knee sprain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a 32 year old man's knee, sprained in a skiing accident. The knee joint is composed of cartilage and fluid (white) that protect and lubricate the joint surfaces, and ligament that joins bone to bone. This patient has had a synovial rupture, where the joint fluid (synovium) has burst from within the joint and spread around the knee, causing swelling and inflammation. Surgical intervention is required to remove the fluid.
