Description
Prometheus and F ring. Satellite image of Prometheus (centre), one of Saturn's two shepard moons, within the F ring (seen as five separate rings). Prometheus' gravitational attraction is believed to cause kinks and knots in the F Ring due to the moon removing material from the ring and replacing material on different paths. Prometheus is thought to be a porous, icy body with low density. It was first identified in 1980. This image was taken as part of the Cassini- Huygens mission, which launched in 1997 with the purpose of studying Saturn and its moons. Image taken on 29 October 2004 by a narrow angle camera aboard the Cassini orbiter.
