Description
Professor Sir Harold Kroto (b.1939), British physical chemist and Nobel Laureate. Kroto is seen here sitting among models of fullerenes ('Buckyballs'), a new form of carbon. Kroto was one of the scientists who, in 1985, first postulated the three-dimensional structure of these molecules. In his left hand he is holding a model of the first of the family to be discovered, the soccer-ball shaped Buckminsterfullerene (C60), in the other hand is a molecule of the rugby-ball shaped C70. In 1996, Kroto shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in recognition of his work on fullerenes. Photographed at the University of Sussex in 1992.
