Description
Installation of the Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. BEBC was typical of the large bubble chambers used in the 1970s to study particles produced at high-energy accelerators. It was a cylinder 3. 7 metres in diameter which, when operational, contained liquid hydrogen at -173 degrees C. The photo shows the chamber surrounded by its vacuum tank, which helped keep the hydrogen cool. When operating, this tank was hidden by the coils of a magnet & various detectors to identify particles that escaped the chamber. BEBC operated from 1973 to 1984 & took some 6. 3 million photos of particle interactions.
