Description
Prehistoric Saharan lake deposits. Men walking on ancient sedimentary deposits in the Bodele Basin, Sahara Desert, Chad. These white deposits are evidence of an enormous prehistoric inland lake known as Mega Chad. At its height around 5000 BC, Mega Chad covered an area of around 400,000 square kilometres, making it the largest freshwater lake on Earth. It is thought to have dried out around 1000 years ago, leaving behind today's dusty Bodele Basin, with modern-day Lake Chad all that remains.
