Description
Pott's disease. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a 43 year old man's lower spine. The vertebrae near the top of the image (T12 and L1) have softened and collapsed due to the infection, compressing the spinal cord. This is giving the patient lower back pain and trouble walking. Pott's disease causes the softening, collapse and inflammation of vertebrae (back bones). It is a secondary disease to tuberculosis (TB) and is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria moving from the lungs to the spine.
