Description
Karl Schwarzchild (1873-1916), German astronomer. Schwarzchild published papers on astronomy at 16. In 1909 he became director of the Potsdam observatory. In 1916 he published solutions to the complex partial differential equations of Einstein's general theory of relativity. He also introduced the idea that when a star contracts under gravity, there will come a point at which the gravitational field is so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. The radius to which a star of a given mass must contract to reach this stage is known as the Schwarzchild radius. Stars that have contracted to below this are known as black holes. Photographed in 1905.
