Description
Pollution detection using bees. Researcher and beekeeper Minh-Ha Pham Delegue and Jean Paucton Delegue using honey bees (Apis mellifera) to detect pollution. Honey bees are sensitive to the smell of flower nectar and pollen, but can be trained to respond to other odours and chemicals, such as pollutants. The level of pollutants in the honey they produce can also be used to estimate the levels of pollution in an urban area. Photographed at the Opera Garnier, Paris, France.
