Description
Pluto. New Horizons image. Pluto, a dwarf planet, is considered to be a Kuiper Belt Object, not a true planet. It is thought to be make mostly of rock and ice. It is around 2370 kilometres across and orbits between 4.4 billion and 7.4 billion kilometres from the Sun. In 2015, it will be visited for the first time by a spacecraft from Earth, with the New Horizons spacecraft flyby due to take place on 14 July 2015. This image was obtained by the New Horizons Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and taken on 3 July 2015. Colour data is from the Ralph instrument. This LORRI image was taken from a range of 12.5 million kilometres.
