Description
Platinum. Sample of the precious transition metal platinum (symbol Pt, atomic number 78). Platinum is dense, malleable and ductile and has a grey-white shiny appearance. It is the least reactive metal element. A few hundred tonnes are mined each year, making it rare and thus very valuable. Its lack of reactivity makes it useful as a catalyst, in laboratory equipment and as jewellery.
