Description
Pine wood structure. Polarised light micrograph of a longitudinal radial section through the stem wood (xylem) of a scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The xylem is made up of tracheids (blue), long narrow cells with a single row of round bordered pits (red and light blue) that allow water to pass through laterally. The wood rays (horizontal bands) can be seen at right angles to the tracheids. The rays are made up of wood parenchyma with thin walls and wood tracheids with thick walls (dark rows of cells). The rays carry water from the xylem to other parts of the outer stem and also store food. Magnification: x46 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
