Description
Parenchyma cells. Light micrograph of a section through a female cone of a pine tree (Pinus sp.) showing parenchyma tissue. The parenchyma are 'filler' cells in the soft parts of a plant. The cells have a thin and flexible cell wall and often a large central vacuole. They carry out a wide variety of functions including photosynthesis, storage of organic products, secretion and wound repair. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
