Description
Pigeon feather, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is a small portion of a feather, showing two barbs (running from upper left to bottom right). The barbs stem from a thick central shaft up the middle of the feather. Each barb has an array of barbules protuding from either side of it. Feathers are made of the protein keratin.
