Description
Jean Piccard (top right, 1884-1963), Swiss-American chemist, engineer and high altitude balloonist, with a group of school children and the Piccard stratosphere flight vessel. This gondola, lifted by a hydrogen balloon and piloted by Piccard's wife Jeannette (1895-1981), carried the couple to a world record height of 17.5 kilometres on 23 October 1934. This journey into the stratosphere made Piccard the first women in space.
