Description
Phenax variegata fly. This planthopper (infraorder Fulgoromorpha) is a member of the Fulgoridae family, found mainly in South America. It has an unusual means of defence, in which the end of its abdomen is extended by clusters of silk (white strands). These detach when a predator attempts to catch the moth, leaving it free to escape. Specimen obtained in Petit-Saut, French Guiana.
