Description
Pear fruit tissue. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through tissue from the fruit of a pear tree (Pyrus sp.). The section shows stone clusters or sclerieds (red), among parenchyma cells (blue). The thick cellulose walls of the sclerieds are impregnated with lignin, the main component of wood, and this provides support for the tissue of the pear fruit. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
