Description
Partial eclipse of the Moon, 19th-century illustration. Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. The orange colour of the Moon (sunlight reflected from the Moon after passing through the Earth's atmosphere) is due to shorter wavelengths, such as blue light, being scattered more in Earth's atmosphere than longer wavelengths, such as red light. This partial lunar eclipse was observed on 24 October 1874. Artwork by French artist and astronomer Etienne Leopold Trouvelot (1827-1895).
