Description
Palestine. 17th century map of Palestine (including what is today Israel), oriented with north at left. The map title across top is in Latin: Palestina, sive Terrae Sanctae descriptio. Relief is shown pictorially. The map is labelled with the Twelve Tribes of Israel (also shown at centre right). There is an inset view of Jerusalem (centre, inset at lower left), and 18 indexed biblical scenes from the Old Testament across top and bottom. The Mediterranean coast is shown, along with the Sea of Galilee (upper left) and the Dead Sea (upper centre). At far right is the Sinai Peninsula (with the route taken by Moses in the Exodus out of Egypt), part of the Red Sea, and Egypt's Nile Delta. This map, by Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius (1588-1664), was published in Amsterdam in around 1650.
