Description
Jerusalem. 16th-century map of the city of Jerusalem, then a provincial city within the Ottoman Empire. Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a holy city for three major religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It has been fought over many times, and besieged and conquered. A biblical Christian scene is shown at lower right. Scenes from the story of the crucifixion of Christ are shown at left, with the city itself at right. This is a 1612 edition of a map first published in volume 1 (1572) of the city atlas 'Civitates orbis terrarum'. This atlas was edited by Georg Braun (c.1540-1622) and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg.
