Description
Light micrographs of embryo hand bones in the process of ossification. Comparison between a micrograph (top) showing a histological section of an embryo hand. The hand bones are in diaphyseal ossification stage of development, with formation of an immature cortex and appearance of hematopoietic bone marrow in the future medullary cavities. The epiphyseal ossification centres have not yet been formed, the epiphyses being formed by hyaline cartilage. At bottom, the diaphyseal ossification centres of an embryo hand are stained with alizarin red due to their calcium content. The hyaline cartilage is stained blue colour by toluidine blue. Magnification: x9 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
