Description
Horse skeleton, excavated from Herculaneum, Italy. This skeleton was found in the grounds of the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. This villa was owned by Julius Caesar's father-in-law, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus. It was destroyed when the volcano Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, but the thick layer of volcanic ash that covered the town preserved buildings, bones and artefacts.
