Description
Orion nebula (M42), infrared image. This nebula, in the lower half of the picture, is a region of star birth. The radiation from the hot young stars ionises the surrounding gas, causing it to glow (red). It lies 1,450 light years from Earth, close enough to be visible to the naked eye as a blurry star in the sword of the Orion constellation. This image was taken with NASA's Spitzer telescope, an observatory orbiting the Earth.
