Description
Optical photograph of the constellation of Canis Major. The bright star towards the top is Sirius, the Dog Star. Although it is only 26 times as luminous as our Sun, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky because it is so close to us, at a distance of 8.6 light-years. It is part of a binary star system, orbiting a faint white dwarf star known as Sirius B (not visible in this photograph). 50mm, f/3, Fuji R100, 11 min exposure, 0505-0516 UT, 29 Feb. 1976, Elsinore site.
