Description
Optical photograph of a faint halo which surrounds the Sombrero galaxy (M104; NGC 4594). To produce this image, four photographic plates were exposed, through four different colour filters (UBRI), using the European Southern Observatory Schmidt telescope. The plates were then digitized, combined and computer-processed to enhance the extremely faint halo. Studies of galaxies in pairs and clusters and of the rotation of spiral galaxies suggest the existance of 'invisible' mass at large distances from the centres of galaxies. The presence of optical haloes around galaxies may help to explain this 'missing mass' problem. Publication ref: ESO Messenger No. 36 (June 1984), R. Beck, R.-J. Dettmar, R. Wielebinski, N.
