Description
Open star cluster NGC 2100, visible-light image. This open cluster of stars is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. The LMC is around 160,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Dorado. This image was obtained with the EMMI (ESO Multi-Mode Instrument) on the New Technology Telescope (NTT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The NTT is located at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. Parts of the Tarantula Nebula (red for ionised hydrogen; blue for ionised oxygen) are also seen, along with star cluster NGC 2092 (far right). Image published in September 2011.
