Description
Anaesthesia open inhalers, 1843-1939, illustration. Seen here are Silk, Killian, Sheild, Flagg and Ogston inhalers. These inhalers were designed to be placed over the patient's mouth and nose. Then volatile liquid anaesthetic (such as ether or chloroform) was dripped on fabric at the end of the inhaler, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anaesthetic and air.
