Description
Oil refinery. Housing close to an oil refinery. A lit flare is at upper left. Flare towers are a way of releasing excess gas from the refinery safely. However, they can also result in high concentrations of air pollution emissions. Chemicals that may be given off during flaring include sulphur dioxide, which contributes to acid rain, carbon dioxide and methane, which are green house gases, as well as heavy metals. Photographed at the BP Amoco oil refinery, Whiting, Indiana, USA.
