Description
MODEL RELEASED. General practice nurse explaining the use of a contraceptive diaphragm (Dutch cap) and an intrauterine device (IUD or coil) to a patient at a well woman clinic. The diaphragm is a thin rubber dome, the rim of which contains a metal spring. It inserted into the vagina prior to sexual intercourse and fits over the cervix, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. IUDs are plastic or metal devices, about 25 mm in length, which are inserted into the cavity of the uterus to prevent conception. They are thought to work by causing changes in the uterine lining which interfere with implantation of the embryo. Models: Kay Roycroft (nurse), Deborah Speake.
