Description
Night drill by British troops, First World War. Shells being fired on and around British trenches on the Western Front during the First World War (1914-1918). Huge numbers of artillery shells were used in the trench warfare on the Western Front, killing millions on all sides. This photograph was taken during a night drill behind the front line, when the soldiers had trench duty exactly as they would in the first line trench. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum.
