Description
Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715), French chemist and pharmacist. After studying as an apothecary at various universities, Lemery moved to Paris where he established a pharmaceutical business. His lectures on chemistry became popular with fashionable society and pharmaceutical students. Lemery discovered little new but was hugely influential as a teacher. His 'Cours de Chymie' (1675) ran to 31 editions by 1756 and was translated into several languages. It gave an account of the chemical methods and pharmaceutical compounds used at the time. Engraved by Cornelis Vermeulen (1644-1708), after a painting by L. Ferdinand.
