Description
Neurosurgery patient. View of the back of a neurosurgery patient's head showing markers placed on the skin. The patient's head is scanned using MRI, CT or PET scanning techniques, and the area to be operated on is located. By comparing this with markers on the skin designed to show up during the scan, the brain can be mapped inside the skull. This procedure allows extremely accurate operations to be performed, with only the minimum amount of damage to the skull and brain. Brain surgery is performed to remove tumours, take biopsies, and to clean up an area after a stroke.
