Description
Surgery to remove a brain tumour. A section of the skull has been removed and the surgeon is making an incision into one of the meninges, the three connective tissue membranes which enclose the brain. Much of the subsequent surgery was performed using a split beam" microscope, which allowed both the surgeon and his assistant a view of the same field. In this case an ultrasound probe was used to liquify and remove the tumour as an alternative to a scalpel. Ultrasonic vibrations are used to emulsify tumour material and allow it to be sucked away: tumour material is removed from the centre of the growth, causing it to collapse."
