Description
Muon g-2 Storage Ring transport. This large apparatus, used to store particles called muons for use in particle accelerators, is here being transported from Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, to the Fermilab site near Chicago. While most of the machine can be disassembled and brought to Fermilab in trucks, the massive electromagnet must be transported in one piece without tilting or twisting more than a few degrees to avoid irreparable damage to the wiring inside. It was transported by barge down the East Coast, around the tip of Florida and up the Mississippi River to Illinois. Photographed in 2013.
