Description
Multipolar dynamo. Historical illustration of a multipolar dynamo produced by the French General Electric Company of Nancy (founded 1898). Dynamos are devices used to convert rotary motion into electrical power. This is achieved by rotating magnets around wires, and generates direct electrical currents. The first efficient dynamos were produced in the 1860s and 1870s. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
