Description
Close-up of a sextupole corrector magnet for the SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) storage ring, during testing. Construction of the independent laboratory in Allan, Jordan, began in 2002 and it was inaugurated in May 2017. It is the only synchrotron facility in the Middle East, and the first in the world to be powered by renewable (solar) energy. Scientific research will be carried out across a number of disciplines, including medicine, physics, biology, archaeology and agriculture. Photographed during testing at CERN's (the European particle physics laboratory) magnet-testing facility SM18 in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2016.
