Description
Mount Kilimanjaro peak, GeoEye-1 satellite image. North is at top. This mountain in north-eastern Tanzania rises from the plains to an elevation of 5895 metres, the highest in Africa and the world's largest free-standing mountain. It is also an active volcano, with this caldera forming Kibo, the highest of the three summit peaks on Kilimanjaro. An outer rim surrounds the central volcanic vent. Snow and ice are seen on the edges of the image. Image obtained on 17 July 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite, launched in September 2008, orbits at a height of 680 kilometres. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.
