Description
Moss leaf cells. Polarised light micrograph of cells in a leaf of shining Hookeria moss (Hookeria luscens). Two whole cells (vertical) are seen at centre, surrounded by parts of other cells. The leaf is made up of a single layer of cells, and so the light micrograph shows the cell structure well. A cell wall (blue) encloses each cell, and numerous chloroplasts (green, round) are seen in each cell. The chloroplasts contain the pigment chlorophyll, which the plant uses for photosynthesis.
