Description
Monoceros R2 starbirth. Infrared image of the star formation region Monoceros R2, located some 2700 light years from Earth in the constellation of Monoceros. Monoceros R2 is an association of massive hot young stars illuminating a collection of reflection nebulae (red, yellow and green) that are embedded in a large molecular cloud. The rate of star formation and the types of stars produced here, differs from that in the nearby (on the sky) Orion Nebula. Foreground stars are blue. This image was obtained by VISTA (the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy), located at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.
