Description
Monkey orchid flowers (Orchis simia). Each of the flowers has an elongated petal (here, white with red spots and a red-tipped forked shape). This is the lip, a specialised structure that attracts pollinators to the flower. The name of the orchid is due to the monkey-shape of the lip. This orchid is found in Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
