Description
Nodules of Rhizobium leguminosarum, the nitrogen- fixing bacteria, on the roots of the French bean, Phaseolus vulgaris. The bacteria are found on the roots & root hairs of certain leguminous plants (peas, beans, clover) that are unable to convert atmospheric nitrogen into organic nitrogen compounds. In a symbiotic relationship, the bacteria convert nitrogen for the plants & in return receive nourishment for themselves. Magnification: x0.5 at 35mm size.
