Description
Nodules of Rhizobium leguminosarum, the nitrogen- fixing bacteria, on the roots of the French bean, Phaseolus vulgaris. The bacteria are found on the roots and root hairs of certain leguminous plants (peas, beans, clover) that are unable to convert atmospheric nitrogen into organic nitrogen compounds. In a symbiotic relationship the bacteria convert nitrogen for the plants and in return receive nourishment for themselves. Magnification: x0.5 at 35mm size.
