Description
Milky Way over Cromlech of Xerez. Central region of the Milky Way in the night sky over standing stones. The standing stones in the foreground form part of a square surrounding a larger central menhir (centre left). The stones were moved here to prevent them being flooded by the Alqueva Reservoir in 2002. Only the large central stone was found at the original site. The smaller stones were re-erected from stones found in the surrounding area. The stones date from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. This site is near Monsaraz, part of Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, Portugal. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Photographed on 18 June 2015.
