Description
Milky Way central region, infrared VISTA image. This image is an extract from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey of the central parts of the Milky Way. It shows the Trifid Nebula (M20, NGC 6514) at centre right. This nebula is faint in infrared, allowing previously hidden background objects to be observed. These newly discovered objects include two Cepheid variable stars, the first ever spotted on the far side of the galaxy near its central plane. The Trifid Nebula is around 5200 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius. Image obtained by the VIRCAM (Vista Infrared Camera) instrument on the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal, Chile. Image released in February 2015.
