Description
Messier 2 is a ball of stars (globular cluster) located about 37,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Aquarius (The Water-Bearer). It has a population of 150,000 stars and an age of around 13 billion years. This Messier 2 is one of the largest clusters of its kind and one of the oldest associated with the Milky Way. Charles Messier, the 18th century French astronomer, catalogued over 100 galaxies and clusters. Through the telescopes available at the time, comets, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies appeared just as faint, diffuse blobs. This image was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
